Financial & Insurance
We will be more than happy to submit all insurance forms for you and help you recover the most from your benefits. We will do everything we can to help you afford the treatment you need and want. If you are incorporated with a traditional dental insurance plan, we will be more than happy to assist you by filling your insurance claim. If you aren't sure of the type of plan you have, we will gladly call for you and explain your benefits to the best of our ability. In order to provide you with premium dental care, we would like to share some facts concerning dental insurance with you:
The basis of your dental insurance plan is a contract between your employer and the insurance company. While we endeavor to estimate your dental benefits to the best of our ability, this is an estimate ONLY. This estimate should not be relied on as the ultimate decision. It is advised to contact your insurance company directly if questions should arise. Again, we will be glad to help you in any way possible.
You could potentially receive notification from your insurance company stating dental fees are higher than usual and customary. Insurance companies survey a geographic area and then calculate an average fee and consider it customary. Since the survey includes discount clinics and managed care facilities, the average may be less than the fees charged in our office. Rest assured that our fees are always fair and competitive.
Several plans indicate participants will be covered up from 80% to 100%, but do not clearly specify the plan fee schedule allowances, annual maximums, or limitations. This is why our office can only estimate what an insurance company will pay toward your treatment.
Writing Off Co-Pays
Often patients will ask that we accept only what their insurance pays and write off any copays. As this practice does routinely occur in some medical offices and in some dental offices, if the doctor routinely writes copays/deductibles off, s/he could be subject to an investigation for a possible Stark Act violation. In addition, the doctor could be in violation of Title 18 of the United States Code - The False Claims Act. In regards to the Stark Act, it could be said that by writing off the co-pay and deductible, the doctor is taking this as a kickback as a means of saving the patient money, or even having the patient refer other patients to the practice. As far as the False Claims Act is concerned, the insurance company can take the write off to mean the doctor's charges are not what s/he says they are. For example, lets say the doctor sends a claim for $100. The insurance company pays $80 and the $20 is applied to the co-pay or deductible. If the doctor writes off the $20, s/he is telling the insurance company that the $80 payment is really OK, therefore the charge for the visit is actually $80. The argument then is why didn't the doctor send a claim for $80? The presumption is that the provider submitted a false claim. The bottom line is this; if the doctor knows that s/he is going to write off the copay prior to submitting the claim, and/or that s/he is using this "write off" as a marketing ploy or an inducement to increase business, that doctor is committing insurance fraud and is a violation of ethical business practices.
